What type o​f Signs are Regulated by the County?

Signs displayed for the purpose of advertising, identification, direction, attention, warning, or designation of any firm, group, place, commodity, product, service, or business. These signs are regulated by the Sacramento County Zoning Code and enforced by the Code Enforcement Division.

What type of Signs are Permitted?

Your sign entitlements depend upon where you are located, the type of business you operate, the actual frontage of the building, and the size of the business use and/or property. Contact the Office of Planning and Environmental Review at sacplan@saccounty.net for questions pertaining to sign entitlements.

What Types of Signs are Prohibited?

  • Portable signs such as A-Frames
  • Banners, Pennant Flags and string pennants
  • Moving, Flashing, or rotating signs; except Barber Poles
  • Signs that include the words, “stop, look, listen” or that interfere with, mislead, or confuse traffic
  • Temporary signs other than construction signs
  • Inflatable or lighter than air devices of any kind Wind Signs
    Any other advertising device attached to a building fence, pole, or vehicle on display unless specifically mentioned in the zoning code.

Are Temporary Signs for Special Events Permitted?

​​Special​ advertising devises may be permitted in certain zones subject to the approval of the Zoning Administrator if the following conditions are met

  1. For grand openings of a business for a period not to exceed 30 days within the first 180 days of business, or
  2. For special sales events not exceeding one period of up to 30 days within a given year. ​
